The Story
For nearly 60 years, Washington National Cathedral had remained committed to the medieval aesthetic of its massive stained-glass rose windows—the North Rose (1932) and the South Rose (1960). But as the final great eye, the West Rose, remained unfinished, a question loomed: should the cathedral remain in the past, or embrace the modern era? In 1970, the administration made a daring choice, placing its faith in Rowan LeCompte.
LeCompte argued that only an abstract design could truly capture the grandeur of God’s creation of the universe. But translating this cosmic vision into glass was no simple feat. In a small, cramped studio, he and master craftsman Dieter Goldkuhle wrestled with color, form, and time itself, their collaboration fraught with creative tension. As the deadline loomed—with a Royal Visit approaching and the window far from completion—doubts mounted. Was this bold new vision a mistake? Then, in a breathtaking climax, the final masterpiece was revealed—an explosion of light and color that would forever change the cathedral’s identity.
